In training for the upcoming Cape Argus Cycle Tour, looking for a picturesque base for the event, or just wondering if it’s worthwhile loading up the bikes for a weekend breakaway?
Well, Hermanus is an undiscovered gem for cyclists, and whilst it’s known for its breath-taking scenery, it’s less known for its amazing off-road trails. Good news is, you can rely on the Whale Coast Hotel to offer you the best of Hermanus, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
The Hemel en Aarde valley covers some of the most picturesque forest and Winelands in the country, and thanks to the hard work of local cyclists, the valley trail proudly offers off-roading for all types of riders, young and old. Choose from an easy-to-moderate 5km trail – a mere half-hour ride, or push a bit harder on the 5 hour, 35 km trail. You’ll be surrounded in pristine natural beauty. The route includes some tarred sections too, so it’s a great mix for those who prefer varied terrain. Day permits are available from Euodia Cycles to PPA and non-PPA accredited riders, from just R 20 per day, with a refundable R30 deposit for a temporary bike board. Route maps mean you’ll never be lost, and a marshall is on the trail all day. All that’s asked is that you leave the trail in the same state you found it – pristine and ready to be enjoyed.
Fernkloof Nature reserve offers something hard-to-find in the big city, an easily reachable 17km circular track that can be joined from any point in the reserve. The reserve itself is worth getting up early for, boasting the most diverse range of flora species to be found on earth.
The Hermanus Cycling Club offers daily rides on weekends, starting at 06h00AM, and is open to riders of all skill levels. Contact them for the latest events to be held in the area, or for membership details.
For the “roadies”, Hermanus offers beautiful tarred routes. The Western Cape is celebrated for its good road conditions, and a ride through the Hemel en Aarde valley, en route to Caledon, on the newly tarred surface is a joy. Expect lighter traffic, and a slower approach to life – in fact, a friendly wave from a passing motorist is not unusual at all.
