Waking up early and meeting up at the Old Harbour for a kayak session in the sea on a cold, almost-winter morning, is not expected to be fun.
However, for a group of guesthouse owners it was an experience they hold near and dear to their hearts.
Herman de Vries of Walker Bay Adventures invited Hermanus guesthouse owners to enjoy an early morning in a kayak in the sea, followed by a delicious warm breakfast above the harbour at Fusion/Bite 2 Eat.
The event, on Monday 15 April, was led by the experienced guide Riaan Kloppers.
De Vries said he wanted guesthouse owners to experience this adventure first-hand so that when they advise their guests what to do, they will be speaking with the benefit of experience.
Braam van der Walt from Hermanus Backpackers made everyone laugh while complaining that the water has too many “up hills”.
Heinie Rosenstrauch from the Grys Paleis was one of the “elderly” taking part, but even though team mate Marika Steyn had to do most of the rowing, Rosenstrauch enjoyed every minute, while everyone laughed at his hilarious comments and “complaints”. At one stage he said he thinks the kayak’s “handbrake” is pulled up.
Estelle Swanepoel from Wild at Heart Accommodation could not believe the “other beauty one sees when you are on the water”.
The warm coffee and breakfast hosted by Estelle Hendriksz was welcoming and well-deserved by all.
) Kloppers has started a surf ski social event for surf ski enthusiasts.
They are welcome to join Walker Bay Adventures on Monday afternoons at 17:00 for a free, social paddling session. Just bring your own surf ski.
